How to Manually Open a Garage Door
Door stuck? Open it by hand
Did you know that every electronic garage door has a bypass function that lets you open and close it manually? This feature comes in handy when you lose your remote or lose power and still need to get into your garage.
This step-by-step guide will walk you through exactly how to release the garage from the automatic smart garage door opener.
Step One:
Make Sure the Area is Clear
If your door is in the open position, and the operator fails, ensure the area beneath the door is clear of cars, and other valuables. Disengaging your door from the electronic functions of the operator while the door is up could cause it to fall on top of you (and anything else in your garage) due to a broken spring. It is very important to make sure to close your garage door and make sure it is fully in the down position prior to disconnecting the door from the operator.
If your door is stuck in the open position, contact Smarr Garage Door to help you repair your door and close it safely.
Step Two:
Get a Ladder Under Your Chain
Inside of your garage, get a ladder and place it underneath the chain on your door trolly (the piece of your garage door that moves with the door as it opens and closes). The trolly is connected to the opener carriage, which is the automatic part that moves the door along the track. When you are safely standing on your ladder, look for the red rope.
Step Three:
Pull the Red Emergency Cord
The emergency release cord (the red rope that is hanging from the trolly) will release your trolley and disconnect it from the opener carriage. Once the door is disconnected from the automated opener carriage, you should be able to manually open and close your garage door
Step Four:
Open Your Garage Door
Pulling the red emergency release should allow you to move the garage door up and down manually. When you are ready to reattach your trolly to your opener carriage, make sure your garage door is back in the down position.
